UNA STORIA ITALIANA - AN ITALIAN STORY

The story of the Compagnia del Cavallo sports association is an all-Italian story: one of passion, quality, love for horse riding and for the beauty and elegance it represents. It’s a story closely intertwined with that of Loro Piana, an artisan company of excellence and the leading company in the world still today, of cashmere, vicuña and extra-fine wool. We hear its exciting story, from the years of its origins to today and its prospects for the future, from the hands-on voice of the founder and CEO, Sergio Tramontano.

Sergio, let’s start with you: first of all tell us your background, and how the original idea of the Compagnia del Cavallo was born.

Let’s start from the fact that the Compagnia del Cavallo is a forty-year long history. My history with the company and the Loro Piana family began when I was walready at university and a great lover of horses and horse riding, and because Pierluigi Loro Piana and I studied together. He too obviously loved horses and horse riding, and so we started talking about it, and at a certain point I pointed out that horse riding, unlike many other sports, was not sponsored. It was not managed by any sponsor. At that time, even sponsorship in the world of sports and professional riding was viewed very badly. Therefore, I told Pigi that, in my opinion, since he made fabrics for jackets with the family business, and since the only

sport that is done in a suit and tie is horse riding, that he could try to start sponsorships in that arena. Thus it all began and the idea of founding the sports association of the Compagnia del Cavallo was born.

It will not have been easy to obtain the various permits, at the federal level …

Absolutely no. It took years to get the permits from the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation. The FISE of today is very different from that of then (we are talking about the early eighties), which looked at us with suspicion, thinking that we wanted to influence the knights or appropriate “shares of power”, so to speak, when we did not even think about it. In the end, however, we succeeded, and we were pioneers from this point of view, so much so that, after a few years many others have begun to follow the path we had traced in this direction.

Thus, the Compagnia del Cavallo was born.

Exactly. Having obtained the permits from the Federation we founded the Compagnia del Cavallo. It is a sports association, and since its foundation the whole Loro Piana family has been part of it. We talked about horses, and how to enter this world, making sure that the sponsor company made itself known by the riders and communicated its existence. At the time Loro Piana was famous for the high quality fabrics it produced, but it was not known beyond the world of tailoring and haute couture.

How did you manage to introduce Loro Piana to the knights?

We started by taking the best riders who were on the Italian field at the time; with names like Roberto Arioldi, Filippo Moyersoen, Diego Deriu and many others of the same stature. Then, as things took hold, we also began to turn to abroad always looking for riders of the highest level to sponsor. And in that area we started in a rather brazen way: my friend Aldo Donadi and I, with whom I was riding at the time and who immediately accompanied me on this adventure, went to ask Nelson Pessoa if he wanted to be our knight. So we took both him and his son Rodrigo, who was just sixteen at the time. After that, of course, the way cleared: we took other very important riders such as Lars Nieberg for example. But our philosophy has always been to take on the team of great champions,

but at the same time also of amateurs who acted a bit as an intermediary between those who simply went on horseback and those who were at the highest levels, to have a kind of trait d’union between the two worlds, which had always been very separate. Among these, we have also had Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein, the sister of the king of Jordan on the team for two years with the Loro Piana colors.

You have a special bond with Piazza di Siena. Is that true?

Yes, once Loro Piana became a well-known sponsorin the field of equestrian sports, we began to take an interest in Piazza di Siena, and we began to work on the event. We started right away with the Rome Grand Prix, which after about fifteen years, became the Loro Pi Grand Prix. It took us many years to get it to be called that but in the end, we succeeded.

Loro Piana has somehow become “synonymous” with great horse riding. I remember many names of horses whose name was preceded by the name of the company, such as the very famous Loro Piana Lagan Bridge …

That’s right, Lagan Bridge did the power categories with Roberto Arioldi. And the name of Loro Piana soon began to appear next to the names of many important horses. To give just a few examples, I can mention Loro Piana Duganò and Loro Piana Special Envoy (edited by both Nelson and Rodrigo Pessoa). In this regard, I remember that at the beginning of our adventure while in the stands I heard people starting to wonder who this “Loro Piana” was … And I heard a person, with a “very informed” air, saying: “It is a Sardinian farm that supplies the horses to Filippo Moyersoen and Roberto Arioldi ~. [laughs, Editor’s Notej Well, at the beginning no one knew Loro Piana, and our attempt almost started as a game. In the end it became much more important than we imagined. We had tremendous success and eventually Loro Piana was all they knew.

Loro Piana is a great success in clothing for horse riding. How did the company’s adventure begin, in this sense?

Loro Piana started creating jackets for its team. For the riders at the time there were only the Husky and the Barbour, which were not the best for horse riding. So, we had specific jackets made for the twenty or thirty people who were part of the team and did the races, and every year several were invented. At the end of the second or third year, many people came to ask us where they could buy the jackets we wore. Obviously, at the beginning we replied that they were not for sale because there was no production, but many kept asking us for information. Therefore, I went to Sergio Loro Piana, who unfortunately passed away recently, and I suggested that he put a riding jacket into production and on sale. At the time, Loro Piana only made high quality cashmere fabrics, scarves and blankets. At that time, however, Pierluigi also entered into agreements with Gore-Tex for the waterproofing of the garments, and so we put the two together. At first only about fifty jackets were made. “It will mean that, if we don’t sell them, you will have them for life”, Sergio told me. And instead we went to the Fieracavalli in Verona with a stand and the jackets sold very well. The Horsey, the one invented at the time, is still in production today. And from there the whole production of Loro Piana outerwear was born. And from there, their showcase and their Storm System® was also born which made jackets for many other sports. Obviously, the merit of the expansion is certainly not of the Company, but we were the starting point.

Has anything changed with the sale of 80% of Loro Piana to LVMH in 2013?

After Loro Piana was acquired by Louis Vuitton, Pierluigi remained vice president anyay, and therefore we were trying to continue along the path we had paved so far. Last Christmas we gained a new CEO and we had a meeting to understand what kind of direction to take. To date, we still have Edwina Tops-Alexander on the team; a great rider and wife of Jan Tops, owner of the Global Champions Tour. We are looking for other important riders and some of which have already been identified. Our intention, at the moment, however is to move forward with Piazza di Siena, where Saturday is now all a bit “ours”, with the Small Grand Prix and the Six Barriers.

Speaking of Piazza di Siena, how was it this year?

It was a nice experience. The real change, apart from Covid, which affected the previous two events, was that this year, 2022, there was a shift to the top of the stage. First it was behind the pines, then it was moved in front and finally above the pines themselves. This year was a beautiful event, everyone participated with great interest and the FISE organized everything very well. We are back with a rather large stage, with more than two hundred people, and certainly Loro Piana has been using this event well for a long time. One year, for example, I remember that we had the representatives of the “Record Bale”, a title that rewards the thinnest wool fibers in the world, established by Loro Piana in 2000, with the aim of obtaining ever-increasing quality and fineness wool while supporting farmers in the constant search for the best raw materials. After all, Loro Piana has always sought the excellence of raw materials.

How did you deal with the pandemic?

Initially there were several problems, because it was not possible to go and mount the horses. A difficulty that absolutely had to be resolved quickly, since the horse cannot remain closed in the stall for so long. Nor could the stable men turn who knows how many horses depending on the size of the riding schools. So fortunately the FISE intervened to resolve the situation. The races were held for a while without an audience, however the horses remained in training. I can say that we have maintained our positions without organizing anything, and while following the rules that existed depending on the period.

Let’s take a look at the present and the future: how do you see social media? Is it useful in this field?

The Compagnia del Cavallo does not use social media specifically, but obviously Loro Piana and its riders do because it is a way to communicate results and make themselves known by the general public. As for our future, it is definitely and always with horses. Horse riding has certainly given a great deal to Loro Piana, especially since the world of horses has an elegance and affinity that are very well linked to the quality and excellence of the clothing. We had the opportunity to create all the clothing both for the race and for the post- race, and we brought forward some items that then became classics even beyond horse riding.

What is your relationship with travel? What are your favorite means of getting around? Apart from the horse, of course!

This summer I was in Polynesia … on horseback it would have taken a little too long [laughs, Editor’s note]. Of course I went by plane, and we were able to sail there for days without seeing anyone among the atolls. For many years I have been taking holidays almost always by boat in the harbor, while almost never going ashore.

And the places that inspire you the most? Are they also from the sea?

In fact, I am a great lover of the countryside. I really like the Sienese area, but in Italy we are spoiled for choice. And if the countryside is also joined by a beautiful coast, it is perfect.   I have also often made some nice trekking holidays both in Italy and in France with my horses.

What should never be missing in your suitcase?

I don’t have a particular answer today. Once, of course, I would have answered with riding boots, or at least the gaiters. Very often,  especially  in  the  past,  as  mentioned  before,  I took holidays in places where there were beautiful riding schools, and with horses and therefore gaiters should never be missing.

Thanks, Sergio: see you for sure in Piazza di Siena, then!

Without a doubt: the Compagnia del Cavallo, with Loro Piana, will be there.
